Why I Hate Independence Day

The Fourth of July is my least favorite holiday and I'm always so glad when it's over. Here are some reasons:1. Fireworks in backyard and another link about this same topic is here2. Idiots drinking too much, then driving or jumping off big rocks3. The heat.4. The pressure to "have a great fourth! WHOO HOO!"5. The crowds if you choose to go watch fireworks (the only good thing for me about this holiday is watching a real fireworks production and I'm still waiting for the big SUMMER TRAGEDY firework even when I'm halfway enjoying it).6. I had a scary experience with fireworks when I was a kid at D.S. Park in @uburn. That can't be the sole reason for my dislike, but I'm sure it's involved. We went to Jennie and Dan's for a nice get together with good food on the fourth, but the heat and a general funk that I'm in kept me down. As we drove home, we pulled over to watch the country's club's firework display. That's the way to enjoy fireworks---with air conditioning blowing on your face, letting a little of the "burnt" smell from the fireworks creep into your car, and the ability to drive off as soon as that mother is over. What's your least favorite holiday and why?

From the old blog comments:

MAX SAID:
I'm with you, Jen--the 4th is hot and crowded and overrated and only makes me think of rednecks shooting off fireworks in the street from July 2nd to July 6th. And if that means I hate America, then so be it. :-)

It's in a tie with New Year's Eve for my least favorite holiday--the NYE pressure to have a "blast" is just something I'm completely over now. (The last two NYE "celebrations" have involved me, Tim, and a really great meal followed by falling asleep before midnight--definitely the best way to do it.)

DONNIE SAID:
My least favorite "holiday", if it's even a holiday, is Halloween.

I don't know if I don't like any of them.
I guess....And your going to shoot me....Halloween. I like the candy & the dressing up. I just don't like the evil sides of the holiday.

And for me New Years, seems to always be a let down. Before I was married, I always seemed to be asked to babysit, so someone else could go have fun.
Then when I got married we never did anything or went anywhere. On a few occassions we have gone to someones house to eat, but that's eat.
Last NYE was fun...D & I had a stack of movies to watch, I cooked. Then after midnight we went & watched a movie with Mom. It was fun.

KRISTY SAID:
Aw, sad. I LOVE the 4th of July. I hat Valentine's Day. It's just a major commercial holliday to rip everyone off. Patrick knows that the day NOT to send flowers is Valentine's Day... I wish I liked it, but I just can't...

TOMMA SAID:
I ain't too crazy about NYE (I have to agree there's too much hype and then I feel like a pooper when I didn't do anything fun or noteworthy) but I have to like Independence Day - it's the day before my birthday! And my eyes light up at fireworks -not the ones going off in the neighbor's yard but the bigger productions! You know about my boat experience at Lake Martin on the 4th but the firework show was amazing!

You know, I usually dislike Halloween. I think it's because I always worried about my costume when I was younger. When I started teaching, I hated all the candy and costume parades. In elementary school, Halloween = Chaos!

This year I didn't dread the 4th of July, but I didn't enjoy it as much a usual. We always swim and BBQ with friends. The fireworks are the highlight. The ones we shoot are BIG like commercial ones. A friend gets them from some wholesale friends. This year we had the same excitement, but I just remember being tired and ready to go home.

You guys are nuts. HALLOWEEN IS AWESOME! I don't think about the evil side of it. The weather, the candy, the stuff on tv, the smell in the air...AWESOME!
